Here's how I advertised my first rally car when I sold it in 1997:

1986 Dodge Shelby Charger

Professionally-prepared ex-Shepherd Pro Rally car. Reliable and fast. Perfect for your first rally car.

The Car

  • Seam-welded and modified with all the trick parts from Chrysler
  • Ready-to-race with roll cage, skid plate, new harnesses, fire extinguishers, window nets
  • Spare engine (used)
  • Two spare transmissions (used)
  • Spare cylinder head (new)
  • A garage-full of spare body panels, suspension parts and glass (new)
  • About a dozen wheels and tires
  • Crates-full of on-event spares like brakes, lights, alternator, etc.
  • Three different engine computers for three levels of performance
  • Wired for Terratrip and Zeron computers and intercom
  • Factory shop manuals

The Record

  • Used by Doug Shepherd to win his first national Production GT championship
  • Hasn't finished a divisional Pro Rally lower than fifth since 1990
  • Still runs in the top 15 on national Pro Rallies (though I have trouble finishing. Not the car's fault, if you know what I mean)
  • 2nd-place finish on 1995 Paul Bunyan divisional was faster than the 8th-place car running the national the same night
  • Car passes state emissions test every year with a little "tuning"

Sorry, folks. I sold it.

And here's what it looked like 24 hours after I sold it. They crossed the finish on the roof. Their time was 6th fastest overall, not too bad for only the 2nd stage ever in competition. The checkpoint crew gave them the mangled finish sign as a souvenier. Good thing we had all those spares!

Here's my new car, a 1990 Eagle Talon.
